In this chapter we describe the appointment of Civil War code-breaker John Wallis to the Savilian Chair of Geometry, and outline his mathematical achievements over the ensuing fifty-four years. Particular works mentioned include his Arithmetica Infinitorum and his books on conic sections and the history of algebra. Other topics mentioned include the founding of the Royal Society, Wallis’s disputes with Thomas Hobbes, the design of the ceiling for the Sheldonian Theatre, and the ancient texts project.
