(p.281) Chapter 13 James Joseph Sylvester
Oxford Figures

John Fauvel

Oxford University Press

This chapter chronicles the life and career of James Joseph Sylvester, from his undergraduate days in Cambridge, via his teaching experiences at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich and in the USA (in Virginia and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore), to his appointment, at the age of 69, to the Savilian Chair of Geometry in Oxford. Although he founded the Oxford Mathematical Society, his efforts to create a research school in Oxford, similar to that in Baltimore, proved largely unsuccessful.
