Introducing Ecumenical Expressivism

Introducing Ecumenical Expressivism

(p.99) 4 Introducing Ecumenical Expressivism
Impassioned Belief

Michael Ridge

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses the main ideas of Ecumenical Expressivism. It begins by explaining the commitments of Ecumenical Expressivism in the philosophy of language, and then turns to the broader meta-semantic framework which provides the most natural home for Ecumenical Expressivism — a framework called ‘Ideationalism’. The upshot of this discussion is that Ecumenical Expressivism is committed to explaining the meanings of normative claims in terms of the distinctive states of mind they express.

Keywords:   philosophy of language, meta-semantics, Ideationalism, states of mind
