Clinical Ethics After Morality: Mediation as Pure Procedure

(p.718) 20.3 Commentary
The Future of Bioethics

H. Tristram Engelhardt

Oxford University Press

Secular clinical ethics education cannot be education in normative ethics, in what one ought to do because, given intractable moral pluralism, there is no rational basis for secular moral agreement on such matters. There is no common secular morality and therefore no common secular bioethics. Instead, clinical ethicists generally function not as moral experts, but more on an analogy with lawyers who mediate disputes in order to resolve controversies within the constraints established by law and public policy. The education of ethics consultants should give a heavy accent to knowledge of law and public policy as the constraints placed on clinical ethics as mediation.

Keywords:   clinical ethics consultation, clinical ethics education, moral pluralism, post-modernity, secular morality
