The question is never whether taking a performance-enhancing drug is justified or not; rather, the question is whether it supports or undermines what we value in that particular sphere. In surgery, we want patients to get well; what do we want in sport? Arguments over whether to accept innovations in sport are over deep, shared convictions about what matters in that sport. When sports have to decide on rules and technologies, three categories of moral appraisal stand out: to promote fairness; to prevent harm; and to preserve meaning. When we live up to our values, sport can be a celebration of ways of being human, and of human excellence in body and spirit.
