The Future of Bioethics

Angus Dawson

Oxford University Press

This chapter explores a number of different approaches to thinking about public health ethics. It is argued that the dominant approach at the moment is one that uses the resources of medical ethics and/or research ethics and that this can be problematic. An alternative perspective, one labeled substantive public health ethics, is outlined and defended. This latter approach attempts to construct a view of public health ethics based upon a critical but sympathetic engagement with the aims and methods of public health as a practice.
