Chapter 4 deals with Lotze’s aesthetics, physiology and psychology as he formulated them in his first decade in Göttingen. The first part attempts to explain Lotze’s aesthetics as an attempt to revive a romantic aesthetics. The general principles of Lotze’s Allgemeine Physiologie are discussed because they offer a clear conspectus of Lotze’s thinking about the philosophy of physiology. There is also a discussion of the chief principles and context of Lotze’s psychology, which played a central role in his thinking at this time.
