Knowledge of the history of epidemiology promotes an appreciation of the common features of all branches of epidemiology, of the relationship of epidemiology with other scientific disciplines, and of the processes of emergence of key concepts. It also highlights the influences of demographic, social, and cultural factors on epidemiology as well as its role in society, placing in perspective the present trends in epidemiology. The why, whom, how, and when to teach are first outlined for a ten-hour course after which are presented the course objectives, assessment of whether they have been reached, structure, and contents. These encompass an overview of the history of epidemiology, with extensive material presented in an annex, an example from the modern history of epidemiology (the scientific and social aspects of tobacco and health), a critical examination of a paper from the past, and a discussion of present trends linking past to possible futures.
