Climate change is a critical issue facing global society and poses important challenges to epidemiologists because of its newness, complexity, and scale. The health determinants affected by climate change include thermal stress, food scarcity, infectious disease risk, and extreme meteorological events. Population health impacts of climatic change is a relatively new and rapidly evolving research area for which there is as yet limited experience in curriculum design and teaching methods. Students should understand the nature and scale of this human-induced environmental change and also learn about the nature of complex systems-based changes. They should appreciate the sources and types of uncertainties inherent in this topic and how to quantify and communicate them. It is necessary that they learn about data-analytic techniques appropriate to this domain of research as well as understand the diversity of epidemiological research methods needed in this complex domain.
