This chapter introduces dental students to epidemiology by using characteristics of oral conditions to facilitate understanding of basic epidemiological principles and study designs. For example, indices for dental caries and periodontal diseases (the two most common oral diseases) are well suited to introduce measuring not only prevalence and incidence but also extent and severity of disease. The cumulative nature of dental caries provides a good teaching example for life course epidemiology, while the epidemiological literature on sugars and caries can serve to illustrate the strengths and limitations of ecological studies. In addition, the extensively researched associations between periodontal disease and general health conditions can facilitate understanding of causal inference, confounding, and ways of controlling for confounders. Finally, the epidemiological profile of oral diseases and the risk factors they have in common with other chronic conditions can inform teaching on public health strategies and the use of epidemiological data for planning.
