Abstract

This book contains chapters on right and ethics in classical German philosophy of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Figures discussed are Kant, Herder, Fichte, Hegel, and Marx. Topics include freedom, rationality, moral duty, moral responsibility, right, recognition, society, history, social justice, politics, equality, and coercion. The approach is to emphasize continuities between the five thinkers more than their disagreements, and to suggest ways in which classical German thought on these topics is still relevant today.
