Not What it Said on the Tin
Not What it Said on the Tin
Assessing Three Decades of Change
Chapter 9 draws conclusions from this analysis of running costs and performance in UK central government over three decades. It returns to the nine possible outcomes that were laid out in Chapter 1 and shows the outcomes that most plausibly fit the analysis lie within a range between government costing about the same (but not less) and working about as well (but not better), to a darker picture of government costing substantially more and working decidedly worse. That suggests that the battle for better management in government has by no means been won, in this particular case at least, and the book concludes by exploring the implications of these findings for widely held ideas about public management, the puzzling or intriguing questions they present for further analysis, and their policy implications for a period in which pressures to make government ‘work better and cost less’ are unlikely to go away.
