Transnational Europhiles, Local Eurosceptics

(p.144) 8 Conclusion
Experiencing European Integration

Theresa Kuhn

Oxford University Press

Chapter 8 pulls together the findings of this book and tells a coherent story about the (incomplete) transnationalization of European societies. It then widens the perspective to discuss why European society formation is important for the European integration project. It shows that, contrary to expectations, the European sovereign debt crisis has not led to more net migration across the European Union. From a more critical stance, it asks what kind of European identity is actually desirable, and it discusses potential risks that are inherent to European identity building. Implications for current research and policymaking and possible pathways for further studies are discussed.

Keywords:   European society formation, European identity, sovereign debt crisis, migration, modern Europe, nationalist Europe, common other, policymaking
