(p.403) Chapter 30 Music in SEM
Strong Experiences with Music

Alf Gabrielsson

Oxford University Press

There are about 1,300 pieces of music or artistes mentioned in this book. To list all of these would be far too cumbersome and require too much space. What is important is to divide them into a limited number of categories which together can give a good overview. This chapter begins with a description of the system chosen to categorize the examples of music that occur in this study, and the distribution across different categories. It then presents examples of the music mentioned in the accounts, including art music, classical music; artistes and ensembles within art music, religious music, folk music, and jazz. The chapter also addresses the question of whether there is any connection between certain strong experiences with music reactions and certain categories of music.

Keywords:   categories of music, artistes, folk music, jazz, religious music, classical music
