This chapter deals with two objections to the theory, one empirical and the other foundational. One objection, pressed by Ian Rumfitt and David Wiggins, is that ascriptions of knowledge how in other languages do not appear to take the form of embedded question constructions. For example, in French, “savoir” takes the bare infinitive in such constructions. Answering this objection requires ensuring that the account of the nature of states of knowing how defended in the previous chapters can be given for ascriptions of practical knowledge in other languages. A second objection is more foundational – why should we look to ascriptions of knowing how for insight into the nature states of knowledge how? How can language reveal insights into the nature of a state?
