This chapter presents further phenomena naturally amenable to an analysis in terms of bias. The chapter begins with a discussion of the semantic differences among co-extensive predicates, roughly in the direction of distinctions of register, with particular attention to the phenomena of coarse language and Child Directed Speech. Sections two and three continue with an analysis of honorifics, and with further comments on nondisplaceability. The last two sections of this chapter apply the ideas introduced in the analysis of register to cases involving proper names, starting with examples such as ‘Professor Gladney’, and continuing with instances involving nicknames.

Keywords:   register, coarseness, child directed speech, honorifics, nondisplaceability, proper names, nicknames
