Athens’ Kinship Ties

(p.209) 6 Athens’ Kinship Ties
Kinship in Thucydides

Maria Fragoulaki

This chapter explores Athens’ mechanisms of xyngeneia and relatedness. Ionian identity and the myth of autochthony were pivotal in Athens’ assumption of an imperial role among the circle of its xyngeneis. Yet, the city’s construction of a unique persona has led to the false assumption that the Athenians were reluctant to acknowledge and claim kinship with other communities. The chapter seeks to demolish this claim by exploring the set of mechanisms by which the Athenians actively expanded the circle of intercommunal relations, with special emphasis on ethnically ‘grey’ areas. A new reading of Athenian synoikism is provided, in relation to the question of composition.

Keywords:   Ionianism, autochthony, Athenian synoikism, Theseus, Archelaos of Macedon, composition, Trojan nostoi, hybridity
