This introductory chapter first sets out the book's purpose, which is to examine the challenge of psychiatric rehabilitation from different perspectives, considering the state of current research, and planning for the future. It then presents some definitions of terms. This is followed by discussion of the goals of people with mental illness; international trends in health-related disabilities; costs of mental health disability; the disability trap and the disability benefits culture; the impact of disability on general well-being; and the ideal components of an evidence-based practice.
