This chapter describes the principles of the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model and the research that helped to establish these principles. The principles are as follows: competitive employment, eligibility based on client choice, integration of rehabilitation and mental health services; attention to client preferences; personalized benefits counseling; rapid job search; systematic job development; and time-unlimited and individualized support. The discussion then turns to the IPS Fidelity Scale, the intensity of IPS services, and employment specialist compentencies.
