A Brief History
A Brief History
Chapter Two traces the evolution of a clinical curiosity, the apparent high rate of young Hispanic females who were brought to mental health services after a suicide attempt. From the earliest research on the topic, located in 1950s-1960s New York City, teeming with an explosion in the Puerto Rican population, this chapter describes the clinical impressions that gathered, the sparse research, the neglect of the public health sector, and then the confirmation of the suicide attempt phenomenon by national surveys. The chapter features a detailed look at what the research uncovered and early explanations of the suicide attempts.
