Anatomy of the Suicide Attempt
Anatomy of the Suicide Attempt
Sociologists have shown that the rate of Latina suicide attempts is above average for American youth, however, we lack sociologic criteria for further distinguishing Latina suicide attempters from Latina nonattempters. Explanations of sociologic factors in Latina suicide, such as economic hardship, relocation, and acculturation, cannot fully resolve the public health issue of Latina suicide. A psychologic approach may illuminate additional contributing factors. For example, one study suggested a pattern of distress followed by an acute interpersonal conflict precedes a suicide attempt in some Latinas. Many of the Latina suicide attempters reported that at the time of their attempt, they were extremely frustrated with family members who were unreceptive to their attempts at communication. Psychology may be able to glean subtle factors contributing to suicide attempts in the Latina individual.
