Research in neurobiology and rhythmic development is surveyed in this chapter. The temporal constraints on rhythm perception and sensorimotor entrainment surveyed in the previous chapter seem to originate in the central nervous system, as show through brain imagining studies using EEG, MEG, and fMRI. Brain imaging has also shown the presence of endogenous beats and accents, even in the absence of an actual auditory stimulus. The role of the vestibular system is also discussed, as well as the changes in rhythmic and metric ability that occur over the course of one’s lifespan.
