In considering the development of the personal computer as a musical tool, attention has so far focused primarily on applications that make relatively modest demands on the underlying technology, for example the development of software for editing and regulating control data within the MIDI environment. The limited processing power of these computers in the early years made tasks such as audio synthesis and signal processing a far more challenging prospect, in many instances requiring the services of additional hardware. In this context the primary stimulus came from the requirements of the recording industry, leading to the production of DSP-enhanced recording facilities from manufacturers such as Digidesign. The central focus of this discussion is the evolution of these hybrid audio processing systems, taking into account some interesting institutional research programs dating from the pre-MIDI era that directly influenced their development.
