Paths to Post-Nationalism

Monica Heller

Oxford University Press

The second ethnographic chapter focuses on the shift to modernist state-territorial nationalism in Québec in the 1960s, showing how conditions produced earlier allowed an emerging bourgeoisie to take advantage of new political economic conditions in the post–World War II period. It examines why and how this struggle took place on the terrain of language, and why the private sector was so important to nationalists. The ethnographic material concerns the implementation of the centerpiece of state action, the Charter of the French Language, in a large Montreal-based, anglophone-owned and -operated manufacturing company typical of the private-sector sites targeted.
