(p.224) { 13 } Mysticism in Ecumenical Dialogue
Teaching Mysticism

Michael Stoeber

Oxford University Press

This essay outlines an approach to teaching mysticism in a diverse and multidenominational context. The course deals with the topic of mysticism by reflecting on a wide variety of specific questions related to four major guiding issues: the nature of mystical experience; the subjective dynamics of mystical experience; the effects of mystical experience for the mystic and the community; and the practices associated with mystical experiences. The essay contextualizes many of the questions related to these major issues, introduces working definitions of spirituality and mysticism, describes the nature of the diverse student-body, and explores methods and goals of teaching and evaluation.
