Palomares and the Visigothic Neumes
This chapter traces the afterlife of Palomares’ association with Burriel, particularly his continued interest in the musical notation and the Old Hispanic rite during work on the catalogue of the Escorial library during the 1760s. His unpublished treatise on the Visigothic script, the Polygraphia Gothico-Española (1764), expands on the association Burriel had made in his own paleography treatise between the history of the liturgy in Toledo and the history of the scripts used there. Palomares presents the narrative of the liturgical reform in the language of national identity, building on Burriel’s account of the same events. This chapter reveals Palomares’s insights into the history of the Visigothic neumes and describes in detail the plates in his treatise that represent examples of these neumes. The conclusion of the chapter describes the contributions of Palomares to the illustration of manuscripts in a later treatise on diplomatics.
