Salmon Migrations, Nez Perce Nationalism, and the Global Economy

Salmon Migrations, Nez Perce Nationalism, and the Global Economy

(p.207) 10 Salmon Migrations, Nez Perce Nationalism, and the Global Economy
Nation-States and the Global Environment

Benedict J. Colombi

Oxford University Press

This analysis of the history of the Nez Perce raises questions about the definition of the nation-state, who belongs to it, and the complex relationship between nature and political culture. Cross-regional salmon migrations help constitute Nez Perce sovereignty and nationalism, which in turn influence the ways in which the Nez Perce have dealt with outsiders, including corporations, state governments, and even other nations in an ever-changing political climate. The chapter transcends political boundaries of the nation and looks at the historical and ecological connections between humans and the natural world on a global level.
