Chapter 4 reviews bivariate statistical methods used to determine the probability that a relationship found between two variables is based on sampling error. The focus of this review is on the methods most commonly used in social work research, including the chi-square test, the one-sample t-test, the dependent samples t-test, the independent samples t-test, and linear correlation. The chapter explains the uses of each method and the formulas for calculating the related statistics. A detailed example is included to show how to compute each statistical test, as well as directions on how to compute the statistic using SPSS. Finally, examples of each method from the social work research literature are described briefly.
