Homophobia, Racism, Financial Hardship, and AIDS

Unpacking the Effects of Social Discrimination on the Sexual Risk for HIV among Latino Gay Men

(p.139) 8 Homophobia, Racism, Financial Hardship, and AIDS
HIV Prevention with Latinos

George Ayala

Oxford University Press

Although experiences of discrimination help explain why Latino gay men and other MSM continue to be disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic, there is still a considerable need to better understand specific sources and types of social discrimination experienced by Latino MSM, the additive effects of experiencing two or more forms of discrimination, and specific mechanisms through which discrimination experiences influence disparities in HIV/AIDS. In an effort to begin filling these knowledge gaps, this chapter reviews the findings of recent original research conducted by the author focusing on the impact of different types of social discrimination on HIV risk among Latino and African American MSM, and discusses their implications for prevention intervention development and future research.
