Protecting Childhood in the AIDS Pandemic

This chapter utilizes Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model of child development, which maps the relationships of the various stakeholders to the child, to determine who bears responsibility in the response to children affected by AIDS. Within this overarching framework, the chapter considers the human rights approach, as encompassed within the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which articulates the obligations state signatories have to the child within the ecology of the child. It also examines state obligations stemming from the conceptualization of citizenship of the child. The article argues that responses must be brought to a scale that adequately ensures the protection, care, and support of all children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in highly affected countries.
