Liberal Islam versus Revolutionary Islamism
Liberal Islam versus Revolutionary Islamism
Almost every major Muslim organization in the world has denounced terrorism and embraced democracy and other liberal ideals. Indeed, according to public opinion polls and election results, liberal Islam is far more popular than revolutionary Islamism. That is why Islamist terrorists often target liberal Islamic leaders, both on their websites and in real-world attacks. With each such attack, the mainstream of Muslim public opinion shies further from terrorism and closer to electoral democracy. The movements that seek to represent this trend are politically liberal and culturally conservative—they aim to implement sharia restrictions through democratic procedures.
