Navigating Environmental Attitudes

Thomas A. Heberlein

Oxford University Press

In this chapter Aldo Leopold describes his attitude toward pine trees. His attitude is then dissected to reveal the important parts—the cognitive and affective components including beliefs and evaluative beliefs—and to show how these parts fit together. Leopold’s attitude illustrates how attitudes are tied to values and have both horizontal and vertical structure. The attitudes of author's students are presented to highlight the diversity of attitude organization and the key role of emotion. These stories and three basic principles—consistency, direct experience, and identity—are used to help understand attitudes toward wolf restoration, ozone holes, and climate change.
