How Discipline Change Happens
This chapter speculates about the course of the field of history since 1907. Attempting to explain why historical specialties gain recognition at different times, it suggests that a field needs more time to become ready for publication in a broad journal compared to a specialized one, and champions of new fields must persuade others that their subjects are historically significant and capable of reshaping the mainstream narrative. After expressing concern about a weakening of the Organization of American Historians' connection with the study of institutional power, the chapter concludes that the preceding chapters offer a starting point for discussion of how learned societies change and grow.
