The Organization of American Historians and the Writing and Teaching of American History

David Montgomery

Oxford University Press

In this chapter, David Montgomery, who served as president of the Organization of American Historians (OAH) in 2000, provides a richly detailed and peopled account of an unusual annual meeting, held in St. Louis, when the OAH and a hotel chain clashed over charges of racial discrimination by the chain against African American patrons. He compares the episode with the decision during the 1950s against holding a meeting in New Orleans. This time, all OAH business was rapidly moved out of the headquarters hotel. The episode was, he concludes, “a lesson in what cooperation can accomplish”.
