Uldine Utley was the most famous of the girl evangelists of the 1920s, and she alone has received any attention of modern scholars—and that little more than in passing. Many other girls became famous, too, but Uldine alone became a household word, even in the secular press. By age twelve, she was publishing a monthly magazine, and preaching night-after-night, for many weeks and months on end. At Madison Square Gardens, she drew a crowd of 14,000 when only fourteen years old. She inspired many girls to follow and she was welcomed on the main platforms of Fundamentalist groups. This chapter covers her career, workload, and opposition, and her final collapse shortly after her marriage at age twenty-five.
