This chapter discusses what has become one of Blitzstein’s best-known works and a staple of American operatic repertoire, Regina, based on Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes. Among other topics, the chapter considers the work’s genesis, including friendly conflicts with Hellman over the adaptation, and Blitzstein’s emphasis of its racial elements.
