This chapter covers Blitzstein’s induction into the National Institute of Arts and Letters; his 1959 trip to Europe; his final critical writings; his plans to write a musical film adaptation of Charlotte’s Web with Mary Rodgers; his final incidental score, to Lillian Hellman’s Toys in the Attic; his decision to write an opera about Sacco and Vanzetti, and the controversy surrounding the Metropolitan Opera’s decision to commission the work with a grant from the Ford Foundation; his second cycle of E. E. Cummings songs, From Marion’s Book; and his sabbatical in Rome in 1960-61 to work on the Sacco and Vanzetti opera.
