This chapter opens with some consideration of the more popular music that Blitzstein wrote in the years preceding The Cradle Will Rock, including his contribution to the left-wing revue, Parade. Most of this chapter is devoted to The Cradle, a groundbreaking work of musical theater, an alternately poignant and hilarious indictment of selling out that accommodated the alienation effects and gestic techniques of Brecht and Weill to more vernacular traditions.

Keywords:   Parade, The Cradle Will Rock, unions, capitalism, Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill
