The nineteenth century fought with Edwards over human nature. New England thinkers at Yale and Andover tried to bend Edwards toward the new Scottish philosophy of human consciousness, Princeton rejected Edwards's metaphysics and ethics in part because it contradicted the “laws” of human intuition, and later American culture became disinterested in a theologian who seemed more interested in God than in natural human existence.
