Contempt and the Vices of Superiority
Contempt and the Vices of Superiority
In this chapter it is argued that contempt provides the best response to the vices of superiority. Arrogance, hypocrisy, and other vices of superiority involve seeing oneself as having comparatively high status, desiring that this status be recognized, and, in at least some cases, attempting to exact esteem and deference on this basis. Contempt is the best way of answering the attitude of superbia at the heart of these vices.
