The Necessity of Action and the Problem of Alternate Possibilities

The Necessity of Action and the Problem of Alternate Possibilities

(p.131) 6 The Necessity of Action and the Problem of Alternate Possibilities
Freedom and Reflection

Christopher Yeomans

Oxford University Press

This chapter traces different forms of doubt about the reality of free will that are grounded in the contrast between a specifically modal form of the principle of sufficient reason, according to which sufficient reasons make that which they explain necessary, and the claim that free will involves alternate possibilities. Again it traces this specific problem of free will through modern, 19th century, and contemporary sources. In addition, it shows that Hegel's own texts seem to suggest a tension between necessity and alternate possibilities, both of which he attributes to free will.
