Chapter 1 provides an overview of progress over the last 50 years in the behavioral sciences. It surveys the main paradigms of cognitive science, including connectionism, the symbolic approach, and dynamicism, in order to situate the approach proposed in the book. This approach is called the Semantic Pointer Architecture (SPA), and is briefly introduced, along with suggested Core Cognitive Criteria (CCC) for evaluating cognitive theories.
