Growth, Trade, and Aid

Growth, Trade, and Aid

(p.101) 7 Growth, Trade, and Aid
Working Hard, Working Poor

Gary S. Fields

Oxford University Press

This chapter demonstrates that economic growth and international trade have made an enormous contribution to reducing poverty. It shows too that the labor market serves as a crucial link between economic growth and poverty reduction. It sums up lessons on what helps economic growth and what hurts it. It considers ways in which trade can be made fairer, not just freer. And finally, it shows how international assistance, if increased in amount and changed in character, can make a big positive difference to the working lives of the poor.

Keywords:   economic growth, international trade, poverty reduction, free trade, fair trade, international assistance
