Religion and Human Security

Daniel A. Métraux

Oxford University Press

This chapter focuses on the impact of the Soka Gakkai Buddhist denomination in Japan. It examines Soka Gakkai's depiction of the problems facing not only Japan but humankind as a whole as well as its proposals for their resolution. Soka Gakkai's goal is the creation of a harmonious and prosperous Japan that will lead the way to a more peaceful world and a resolution of such challenges as global warming. The chapter analyzes how Soka Gakkai and Komeito used the party's position as a vital coalition partner with the ruling conservative Liberal Democratic Party to forestall attempts by the government to revise Japan's 1947 “peace” constitution.
