This chapter examines the ghostwriting services that Arthur Lourié provided to the Boston Symphony Orchestra conductor Serge Koussevitzky, and the Lourié compositions that Koussevitzky promoted in awkward exchange. The chapter also addresses Lourié’s emigration from Paris to New York, and the fate of his opera The Blackamoor of Peter the Great. The chapter takes up Lourié’s Koussevitzky biography, which the conductor himself commissioned, as well as the speeches he wrote for Koussevitzky and his thoughts (published and unpublished) on the fates of Soviet composers following the 1948 crackdown on Soviet musical activity. The chapter makes extensive use of unpublished letters housed in the Library of Congress.
