The Big Picture

The Big Picture

(p.230) 12 The Big Picture
Rationality + Consciousness = Free Will

David Hodgson

Oxford University Press

In Chapter 12, I consider what my approach to free will suggests about our universe and ourselves, contending that our universe is not one of ‘blind pitiless indifference,’ as Richard Dawkins would have it; but that the existence of consciousness and rationality and the embedding of values in the universe are indicative of a universe that is in some sense benevolently creative. On the other hand, I contend there is no sound basis for accepting the literal truth of any religion, and indeed that fundamentalist religion of any kind has the potential for great evil.
