The Music of James Bond

Jon Burlingame

Oxford University Press

Six years after the disappointing box-office returns of Licence to Kill, Bond is played by a new actor (Pierce Brosnan) and acquires a new composer: French composer Eric Serra, whose cutting-edge style of synthesizers-plus-orchestra had proven popular in recent French thrillers. Serra created the electronic music in his studio in Paris, while John Altman orchestrated and conducted the live musicians in London who would augment the modern electronic sounds. Serra's unconventional version of the "Bond Theme" during the St. Petersburg tank chase, however, was rejected, and Altman created a more traditional orchestral version that wound up in the film. Bono and The Edge of U2 wrote a title song for Tina Turner that was a hit in the U.K.
