Various mental health interventions, approaches, and strategies are discussed in the literature for responding to cases when alienation or other parent-child contact problems are present. Deciding the most appropriate intervention for children and families will depend on the nature of the parent-child contact problem (alienation, justified rejection, elements of both—a mixed case, other dynamics such as enmeshment, age-appropriate reactions, degree of intentionality on the part of the favored parent to exclude the other parent) and the level or extent of the parent-child contact problem (mild, moderate, or severe; responsiveness to intervention and court orders on the part of the favored parent). This chapter discusses the role of the court in educational and therapeutic interventions; principles and guidelines; goals of counseling; treatment modalities, approaches, and strategies; summary of specific interventions, protocols, or approaches; and aftercare, training, accessibility, and costs of interventions.
