A close association exists between secular identification and certain patterns of sociopolitical attitudes. What accounts for this connection? This chapter examines ideological patterns characteristic of seculars in regard to civil rights, domestic and foreign policy, the military, medical ethics, criminal justice, the environment, and the economy. However, these topical issues also reflect deeper and more general values shared by seculars. Beyond a central belief in separating religion from the political functions of the state, seculars show strong tendencies toward tolerance of different others, nondogmatic thought, and antiauthoritarianism. Perhaps the central value that most characterizes secular sociopolitical thought is the emphasis on individualism.
