Buying and Selling
Buying and Selling
This chapter introduces Paramount Pictures to the musical roadshow game of the late 1960s. The studio was ailing after a series of box office duds. Its aging board and executive staff lacked an understanding of the current all-important youth market. Gulf+Western bought Paramount and its CEO Charles Bluhdorn hired brash young Robert Evans as head of production. The studio produced and distributed Half a Sixpence, a British musical, and it quickly sank. The chapter concludes with a survey of the 1967 film awards, when Camelot, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Doctor Dolittle were all vying for attention. The greatest shock came with Dolittle’s nine Academy Award nominations. The awards campaign for Dolittle was nothing if not effective.
